Nature and EcotourismA Wild-life sanctuaryThe southern islands are today a nature reserve, UNESCO listed since 1996 as a Biosphere Reserve. 2 marine national parks were created (Joao Viera-Poilao and Orango) to protect this biological marvel. The site contains a high diversity of plant and animal species, many of which are endemic, with a special protection programme for marine turtles, salt water hippos and manatees. João Viera is an important sea turtle nesting island in the Bijagós Archipelago. It is also a centre for sea fishing and is the centre of the João Viera Marine Park. Meeting with another civilizationFew people visit this area and most of the time, the Africa Queen’s passengers are the only foreigners coming to visit those villages. Bijogos are friendly people who will be pleased to welcome you. The crew will organize the visits during the season at discretion, not to disturb their everyday life. Gifts to the village’s Chiefs are planned by our staff but you can also offer during your visit basic items for children (clothes, paper book, pen…) or medicines. |
